As we neared Chettinad, Joshy was surprised to come across a busy streetside produce market. In his many years of driving this route he'd not seen it here before so he thinks its either a travelling market of perhaps only takes place irregularly on a Saturday.
Anyway he stopped so David and I could go and explore. The stallholders (and shoppers) were all very jolly and we had great fun with them - lots of demands for photos to be taken so here they are (well some of them anyway)
Fresh fish being 'prepared'
and displayed/sold
Local vegetables
Onions
Greens
Lovely cauliflowers
These are the fruits of the banana plants ... used to make curry dishes
Grape seller ..... I loved the old fashioned weighing scales
Chicken tonight!
and for them too
We have no idea what this vegetable is ... It looks like a 'puckered' green pepper/capsicum
prickly cucumbers?
and some of the smiling faces (not too many as the power keeps failing here and crashing the internet so don't want to tempt fate)
we were given a piece of fresh root ginger to try and, boy, was it good! We've bought a large piece to take back to England with us on the basis it will still be fresher and tastier than anything we can buy in the supermarkets next week. Real tongue tingling taste ...

You're seeing so much and treating us to such wonderful photos! I think the puckery green fruit you photographed may be a chayote squash but can't really tell from a photo. I'm sure a lot of different fruits/vegetables look similar all over the world. Here's link that you can compare when you have good internet: https://mauitime.com/food-drink/maui-food-news/chayote-squash-cooking-workshop-at-haliimaile-community-garden/ Sorry, I can't make it a clickable link!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely find. I'm always amazed when I see cauliflower for sale as it seems far too mundane in such an exotic place!
ReplyDeleteIt was a 'quality' market Di. We've seen caulis for sale in the streets here and they've been tiny. These were monsters by comparison - in fact all the food was wonderful (as were the people)
ReplyDeleteHey Sue, I had ventured a guess about the mystery vegetable but I either forgot to hit post (have to jump thru hoops sometimes to post) or it didn't get through.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think that may be a chayote squash. I've never eaten one but they're beginning to show up in our supermarkets as they come from Mexico and we now have a large Hispanic population.
the puckered green veg is Chayote squash or pear squash and prickly cucumbers are really Bitter Melon :) Great pics again !
ReplyDeleteThank you Meera. I'm really pleased to learn what these are.
